With profound sadness, the Maryland Bosnia and Herzegovina Exchange Council mourns the passing of President Jimmy Carter, a leader whose compassion, humility, and unwavering dedication to human rights have left an enduring legacy cherished by the Bosnian American community.
For Bosnians and Bosnian Americans, his advocacy for the oppressed and marginalized, along with his vision for a more equitable and just world, holds special significance. Bosnian Americans will never forget President Carter’s visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1994, during the aggression on our homeland, when he courageously worked to help bring peace to a war-torn nation. His steadfast commitment to truth and reconciliation remains a powerful reminder of the enduring values necessary in the fight for justice for the victims of the Bosnian Genocide and all those who have suffered injustice worldwide.
President Carter’s tireless pursuit of peace and justice has left an indelible mark on the global stage. Through the Carter Center, his efforts to resolve conflicts, alleviate poverty, and uphold democracy reflected his steadfast belief in the transformative power of dialogue and mutual understanding worldwide.
The Maryland Bosnia and Herzegovina Exchange Council extends its deepest condolences to the Carter family and pays tribute to the extraordinary life of a man devoted to service. May his memory inspire us all to continue striving for a more compassionate, peaceful, and just world.
