October 7, 2026 – Sarajevo Mayor Samir Avdić presented U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen with the “Honorary Citizen of the City of Sarajevo” recognition.
The United States-Bosnia and Herzegovina Exchange Council expresses its sincere gratitude to Mayor Avdić and the City of Sarajevo for honoring Senator Shaheen. This is a well-deserved recognition of her longstanding friendship with Bosnia and Herzegovina and its people as well as her work to strengthen relations between our two countries.
Throughout her Senate career, Senator Shaheen has advocated for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, supported its democratic development, and encouraged its progress toward the European Union and NATO. Her engagement in Washington and repeated visits to the country have reflected her commitment to continued American support for its future. In announcing the award, the City also highlighted her advocacy for Sarajevo and her recognition of the city’s resilience and place in Europe’s future.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Senator Shaheen for all she has done for Bosnia and Herzegovina and for the United States over her many years of public service. We deeply appreciate her commitment to the country and its people, and we congratulate her on this honor.
