The Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Washington, D.C., hosted a reception on December 3, 2024, to mark the 19th anniversary of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina (AF BiH).
The event was organized by His Excellency Sven Alkalaj, Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the U.S., and Brigadier Edin Čizmić, the Defense Attaché to the U.S. Attendees included representatives from the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Department of Defense, the Maryland National Guard, the Maryland-Bosnia and Herzegovina Exchange Council, distinguished members of the diplomatic corps in Washington, D.C., military officials, and members of the Bosnian-American community, highlighting the strong relationship between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the United States. Among the notable attendees was Mr. Kemal Ademović, Deputy Chairperson of the House of Peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Parliamentary Assembly, who was in Washington for an official visit.
Speeches at the event highlighted the progress made by the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the continued partnership between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the U.S. Ambassador Alkalaj spoke about the ongoing collaboration in training the Bosnian Armed Forces at U.S. military institutions, which has played a significant role in strengthening their capabilities.
Brigadier General Andrew W. Collins of the Maryland National Guard recognized the AF BiH’s achievements in military police training, aviation, cyber defense, and medical evacuation. He also emphasized the expanding cooperation between Maryland and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has grown to include the civilian sector. “The progress Bosnia and Herzegovina has made is an important step toward NATO integration,” Brigadier General Collins stated.
Brigadier Čizmić highlighted the essential role of the Armed Forces in promoting peace and unity within Bosnia and Herzegovina. He underscored that the AF BiH serves not only as the country’s defense force but also as a symbol of unity and mutual respect. “The Armed Forces are a vital part of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s defense and serve as a positive example for the nation,” he said.
The reception not only celebrated the anniversary of the AF BiH but also reaffirmed the commitment of both Bosnia and Herzegovina and the U.S. to continue their cooperation in promoting peace and stability. The event also underscored the importance of the partnership between the two countries in advancing both military and civilian sectors.
