Biography

Mia Bakal serves as a Research Assistant in European Studies at I4DI, supporting the Maryland Bosnia and Herzegovina Exchange Council (MBHEC). Her responsibilities include evaluating bilateral partnership initiatives, analyzing environmental and policy impacts in Bosnia and Herzegovina, researching community engagement strategies, and assessing regional stability programs. Mia’s interdisciplinary expertise spans democracy, international law, migration, cultural studies, sustainability, and AI policy, enabling her to address complex global challenges with innovative and inclusive solutions.

Prior to joining I4DI, Mia led initiatives prioritizing marginalized populations and contributed to projects focusing on innovation, gender equality, and international humanitarian law. She holds a Master’s degree in German and European Studies from Georgetown University, concentrating on Democracy, Conflict, and Identity. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations, with a minor in International Law and Diplomacy, from the University Sarajevo School of Science and Technology. During her studies, she participated in exchanges in The Hague, Netherlands, and Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, experiences that deepened her cultural awareness and adaptability.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Mia enjoys drawing, creating digital art, cooking, reading, traveling, and gaming.
