UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK | SREBRENICA, 30 YEARS LATER: A NEW GENERATION’S JOURNEY

On July 7, the Permanent Mission of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Nations opened a photo and video exhibition at UN Headquarters in New York to mark the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide. Titled “The Legacy of Hope after the Genocide in Srebrenica: A Journey of a New Generation,” the exhibition explores how young people—either survivors of the genocide or born after it—are carrying forward the memory of Srebrenica.

The exhibition was opened by Dr. Denis Bećirović, Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who spoke about the importance of remembrance and intergenerational responsibility.

Developed by Hasan Hasanović and the Oral History Team at the Srebrenica Memorial Center, the exhibition presents eight individual stories told through video interviews and visual panels. Each highlights the experience of families directly affected by the genocide, focusing in particular on the role of mothers who raised children amid loss and displacement.

Speakers at the opening included Ambassador Zlatko Lagumdžija; Kada Hotić, Vice President of the Association of Mothers of the Enclaves of Srebrenica and Žepa; Amra Begić Fazlić, Assistant Director of the Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Center; and Elmedin Konaković, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The audience included diplomats, UN officials, survivors, human rights advocates, and members of the Bosnian diaspora from across the United States. Representatives of several Srebrenica survivor associations, including those led by Munira Subašić, were in attendance, along with young descendants of genocide victims who traveled to New York to take part in both the exhibition and the official UN commemoration on July 8.

Also present were delegates from diaspora organizations based in New York and Washington, D.C., as well as international journalists. Adnan Hadrović attended as a representative of both the Maryland Bosnia and Herzegovina Exchange Council and the Institute for Development Impact (I4DI) in Washington, D.C.

The exhibition will remain on display at UN Headquarters through the July 11 observance of the International Day of Remembrance of the Genocide Against Bosniaks in Srebrenica.
